Celebrating the power of poetry in the lives of Americans

POETRY

UNITES AMERICA

about

Poetry Unites America is an essay writing contest and documentary film project, which reveals how much Americans have in common when they open up through their love of poetry

Let us share your story of what a poem you love has meant to you.

Whether you are a truck driver, lawyer, farmer, student, nurse, artist, or doctor,
Poetry Unites invites you to tell how a poem has changed your thinking,
explained your feelings,
captured your imagination or touched your heart.

So far we have featured four states: Alabama, Kentucky, Kansas and New York.
Forthwith we are preparing Poetry Unites Mississippi and Poetry Unites Georgia.
We are working closely with poet laureates of both states. Stay tuned.

films

Four films have already been produced: Poetry Unites New York (now on PBS AllArts Documentary Select List), Poetry Unites Kansas, Poetry Unites Kentucky (premiered on PBS KET in April 2021) and Poetry Unites Alabama (2022), which was broadcast on PBS APT in April 2022 and has been shown several times since then.

The subjects of the films are selected through a statewide contest for the best essay written on the significance of a particular poem in the entrant’s life. The four contest winners in each state are featured in a documentary directed by Ewa Zadrzynska.

Currently we seek the financing for next episodes featuring Georgia, Mississippi, Minnesota, California and Ohio.

I've viewed Poetry Unites films focusing on Kentucky and Kansas, and I think they are excellent. ... I'm thrilled Poetry Unites producers wish to focus on Mississippi, an often-overlooked state but one with a very rich cultural and literary history.

Poetry Unites is an amazing collection of testimonials to the power of poetry; indeed, I have never seen anything quite like it! Ewa Zadrzynska presents the viewer with the faces and voices of ordinary Americans — each with a story of an intimate and life - changing connection to a particular poem.

Ewa Zadrzynska holds a remarkable gift for uniting communities over a love for poetry and storytelling. I fully support the continuation of this powerful series and look forward to a peek into the lives of communities all across America who otherwise, may not have the resources to do so on their own.

I am a great admirer of Poetry Unites America.... Everyone knows that these are deeply troubled times in our country...Poetry Unites actually brings people together. That is its agenda – to put art to work, to observe and heal.
